Bootable USB drives

I recently purchased a USB drive and I wanted to make it bootable with Windows 10 . after a few searches, I found Rufus and downloaded this free application. It worked great, and so now I am recommending that you use this if you want to make a bootable USB drive. On another note, the thumb drive is 32 Gigabytes, and so I also created a folder on the drive with all the downloads that I use on my laptop. Now all I need is a paving script that will install said downloads so that build a new laptop is a snap. Updates will have to be done later, but at least I have my suite of applications in one spot.

search is king

It used to be true that the more facts you memorized the smarter and more valuable you were to your circle. Now it looks like knowledge of how to search for answers is getting to be more important than the answers themselves.

Perhaps this is because the data behind the search is now changing faster than ever, not too surprising if you consider that more sensors are connected to the internet and available to query. eight billions devices in 2013 according to one source

So how do we search? Mostly with text that gets typed into a keyboard, but more recently, searches can be accomplished with words spoken into a device (Siri and the android microphone come to mind). Do we ever search in a spatial manner? Yes, on the old Microsoft windows 7 start menu, and on the mapping browser pages on the traffic maps. It seems that Windows 8 and 8.1 have moved away from the spatial searches, and it will be interesting to see how this affects it's adoption.

Datepicker using JQuery

This is one way that I used recently to create a datepicker in javascript. Once you do this once, it is trivial the second time through. I am hoping that this post will same someone else some time. Enjoy - Steve // On your page, add a reference to the JQuery UI // Put in a “document.ready” method (called after page is loaded). This function will take all controls of class ‘datepicker’ and will run the datepicker () method on it. In this case, we have opted to have the picker allow changing the month and the year. // Now just enter an input control of class ‘datepicker’ wherever you want it and you are done. or

beef stew recipe

I have been asked to post my beef stew recipe and this is a good as spot as any. All ingredients are diced into ½ inch pieces, as much as possible. You need to keep these large so it does not turn into a big mush and you do not know what you are eating when you sample the stew.
• Two pounds of beef – with gristle removed
• Four large onions
• One to two pounds carrots
• One to two pounds potatoes
• One pound celery
• Two large scoops of beef base (or beef bouillon)
• One cup water
Put carrots into large pot first as they will not burn and will allow better cooking. Sear beef in frying pan until browned on all sides and add to pot. Add onions, celery, and carrots. Clean frying pan with water and add this water to the pot. Add in potatoes, beef base, and rest of water. Cook on range with low heat for an hour. When the potatoes break apart, you know you are done.

Enjoy with toast.

A historical perspective on cloud computing

The ideas of moving corporate data to the cloud in the beginning of the 21st century is shown as a reincarnation of what happened at the beginning of the 20th century with power systems.

Media and the fan base

Good media is critical for strengthening the fan base of sports teams. We had a dozen of our friends over yesterday to see the Louisville Cardinals beat the UCLA Bruins in soccer by a score of 5-4 in the NCAA quarterfinals for the 2010 D1 college cup. Most of these folks had never seen the Cardinals play, and some had not seen a soccer game. They were treated to a great game with the Cards overcoming a two goal deficit.

While the good food and good friends might have led them here in the first place, I can assure that the action packed game with streaming media and excellent narration by Sean Moth has created a few extra fans here in Portland Oregon. This could lead to a viral fan base that will help keep Louisville on the radar screen for top soccer talent from the West coast.

If there would have been no audio, then this would not have been as satisfying to our guests. I was getting ready to break out the play by play, as this is the first streaming video from Louisville with audio, but was thrilled to find that this was not needed.

I am very pleased to see that the Cardinal multi-media experience has stepped up their game in synchrony with the Louisville soccer team in their quest for national excellence.

the master stroke

I often get asked about leadership and how I exemplify this. My favorite answer comes from a lesson that I obtained from my father, Harold Tufty, who learned it himself as a teenager when he was an arborist at the National Cemetery in Arlington Virginia.

There was this older arborist who once asked my dad to cut a branch way out on a skinny limb. It had to be cut on the very end of the branch so as to allow for keeping the most living part of the branch and the best growth for the tree.

When my dad thought this to be too dangerous and refused, the teacher told him to "just watch this". Little by little the older, heavier arborist snuck out on this precarious limb and cut it at the specified location, just at the correct spot.

Going out and doing things the correct way, taking calculated risks, is what sets a great arborist apart from a good arborist. Indeed, this was the master performing the master stroke,
